Overview

States United Democracy Center, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to the rule of law and free, fair, and secure elections, is seeking a General Counsel to join its Operations team. The General Counsel, a senior attorney, will oversee the organization’s internal legal matters.

In Short

• Provide strategic legal counsel to the COO and Executive team on legal and regulatory matters.
• Identify and mitigate organizational risks.
• Ensure compliance with IRS regulations and other legal requirements.
• Draft and review legal agreements and documents.
• Supervise outside counsel and junior attorneys.
• Monitor changes in the legal environment affecting the organization.
• Assist COO with HR issues and workplace practices.
• Implement standardized legal procedures across the organization.
• Commit to a minimum of 15% travel time.
• Work East Coast hours.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active license in a U.S. jurisdiction.
• 12-15 years of legal experience, with 5 years in a senior role.
• Strong understanding of nonprofit and tax law.
• Experience with organizational risk assessments.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to work beyond normal hours as necessary.
