Overview

The Human Resources Leave of Absence Specialist is responsible for administering and supporting the organization’s leave of absence processes. This role serves as an expert on benefits and leave policies, partners closely with employees, HR, and payroll teams, and ensures compliance with federal and state regulations. Strong attention to detail, excellent customer service, and the ability to manage confidential information are essential to succeeding in this role. This position will also assist with special projects as needed.

In Short

  • Administer and manage all employee leaves of absence, including FMLA, ADA, state-specific leaves, military leaves, and company-sponsored leaves.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions regarding leave, eligibility, and plan processes.
  • Responsible for assisting employees with FMLA/LOA in accordance with applicable law and Company policy.
  • Conduct eligibility reviews, provide required notices, track time, and maintain compliant documentation throughout the leave cycle.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local leave laws, including multi-state regulations for a remote workforce.
  • Coordinate return-to-work processes with employees, managers, and HR leadership.
  • Partner with payroll to ensure accurate pay, PTO usage, and benefits contributions during leaves.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA when handling sensitive medical information.
  • Deliver empathetic, professional employee support while maintaining confidentiality and consistency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledgeable in human resources best practices, procedures and principles.
  • General knowledge of various employment laws and regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organization skills, and attention to detail.
  • Confidence and presence to effectively handle interpersonal relationships and manage sensitive and confidential HR situations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficient with or ability to quickly learn HRIS.

Benefits

  • Associates Degree or equivalent from two year college or technical school in related field; or SHRM Certification preferred.
  • At least three years HR related experience required.
