Back-end Architect - Remote

Overview

We are looking for a Back-end Architect to help drive the launch of a new, high-impact business line at Toptal. In this pivotal role, you’ll own the technical vision and turn napkin sketches into a resilient, scalable platform.

In Short

• Lead the architecture and technical decisions for a new business line.
• Set end-to-end architecture including data storage and task orchestration.
• Drive build vs. buy decisions and seed the initial tech stack.
• Prototype core services and establish engineering culture.
• Mentor a small team of engineers as the company scales.
• Collaborate with Product Lead to translate customer needs into technical requirements.
• Participate in recruiting and onboarding new team members.
• Balance technical roadmap with existing technical debt.
• Stay updated with technology advancements.
• Work towards achieving compliance (SOC 2).

Requirements

• 10+ years designing and shipping distributed data systems at scale.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Fluency with major cloud and modern data stack.
• Experience architecting large-scale data or ML platforms.
• Hands-on experience building zero-to-one products.
• Ability to pitch architecture to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Collaborative mindset with a focus on ownership and outcomes.
• World-class individual contributor skills.
