Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel for American Rivers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and its affiliated 501(c)(4) organization, responsible for ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, providing legal advice, and protecting the organization's interests.

In Short

Position: Legal Counsel
Classification: Senior Director
Location: Washington, DC Area (Preferred)
Experience with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations required
Responsible for legal compliance and risk management
Draft and review legal documents
Advise on governance and compliance policies
Monitor legal risks and provide proactive solutions
Support General Counsel in litigation and disputes
Excellent communication skills required

Requirements

Juris Doctor (JD) licensed to practice law in the U.S.
5+ years of legal experience, preferably in nonprofit sector
Proven impact with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Knowledge of federal regulatory compliance preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Slack
Experience with project management software is a plus
Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly
High ethical standards and sound judgment
