Staff Backend Engineer, Knowledge Graph (Rust) - Remote

Overview

As a Staff Backend Engineer on the GitLab Knowledge Graph team, you will help design, scale, and operate a high-impact graph data service that underpins agents, analytics, and architecture-level features across GitLab.com, Dedicated, and Self-Managed deployments.

In Short

• Lead the design and evolution of core Knowledge Graph services in a production Rust codebase.
• Own complex, cross-cutting initiatives spanning various GitLab platforms.
• Drive system design decisions to improve reliability and scalability.
• Define and improve operational maturity for the service.
• Collaborate asynchronously with product, data, infrastructure, security, and AI teams.
• Apply AI-assisted development workflows responsibly.
• Mentor and support other engineers.
• Contribute across the stack when needed.

Requirements

• Significant experience building and operating production backend systems.
• Strong engineering skills in Rust.
• Strong system design skills.
• Strong fundamentals in preparing information for AI agents.
• Comfort working in ambiguous environments.
• Experience with distributed data or analytics systems.
• Familiarity with graph data modeling and/or query patterns.
• Practical experience using AI tools in development.
• A language-agnostic mindset.
• Excellent written communication skills.
