VP, Data Engineering - Remote

Overview

Axios is a growth-stage company dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We’re hiring a VP of Engineering, Data, to own the engineering function for Data within Axios. Within this role, the individual is responsible for managing the leadership team that supports Data Engineering, Data Science, and Data Analytics. They will also act as lead architect and take responsibility for the ownership of the data platform itself.

In Short

• Directly manages data engineering leadership and some engineering directs through 1:1s, coaching, and feedback.
• Owns and is responsible for all aspects of the data platform.
• Sets the vision and strategy for the data platform.
• Supports Data Leadership to maintain and evolve engineering best practices.
• Partners with Product and Data Leadership to develop team roadmaps.
• Defines and owns product health metrics.
• Provides technical guidance on industry best practices.
• Supports cross-functional teams for effective prioritization.
• Owns technical relationships with key vendors.
• Hires and manages a diverse team while fostering an inclusive environment.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience leading data-focused engineering teams.
• 5+ years of data science & machine learning experience.
• Experience working with stakeholders at an executive level.
• Expert grasp of data engineering principles.
• Skilled in working with columnar data warehouses and business intelligence tools.
• Understanding of modern ML infrastructure.
• Knowledge of data engineering & analytics methodologies.
• Excellent listening and communication skills.
