Overview

American Oversight is a nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog that advances truth, accountability, and democracy by enforcing the public's right to government records. We use multiple tools, backed by aggressive litigation, to fight attacks on democratic institutions, threats to civil rights and liberties, abuses of power, and erosion of government transparency.

• Seeking a Senior Counsel to manage a diverse caseload under different state and federal law jurisdictions.
• Handle all aspects of federal and state open records litigation.
• Craft and execute legal strategies to defend against attacks on democratic institutions.
• Advise and collaborate with researchers and organizational partners.
• Lead cases and projects that arise in the course of work.
• Conduct oral arguments in federal and state courts.
• Mentor junior attorneys and interns.
• Negotiate with federal and state officials regarding open records requests.
• Maintain knowledge of FOIA and state open records laws.
• Represent American Oversight in meetings and presentations.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice in at least one state.
• 10+ years of relevant legal experience for external candidates.
• Experience with civil and appellate practice.
• Strong commitment to public interest advocacy.
• Demonstrated skills in litigation, legal research, and negotiation.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience in a nonprofit environment is a plus.
• Familiarity with pro-democracy issues.
• Ability to work East Coast business hours.
