Overview

AllTrails is seeking a visionary Principal Digital Cartographer & Map Experience Lead to define and lead the next generation of map design and experience, transforming complex geospatial datasets into intuitive and engaging map experiences.

In Short

• Define and drive the end-to-end cartographic strategy across AllTrails products.
• Create visually compelling and context-aware maps tailored for outdoor exploration.
• Lead a culture of experimentation and A/B testing around map styles.
• Translate complex geospatial datasets into intuitive map layers.
• Develop 3D mapping experiences using high-resolution elevation data.
• Ensure map experiences are globally scalable and locally relevant.
• Shape map experiences for offline and low-connectivity environments.
• Collaborate with Engineering on next-generation tiling systems.
• Establish high standards for data accuracy and responsible representation.
• Drive collaboration across Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Design.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in digital cartography or geospatial design.
• Expertise with Mapbox and elevation datasets.
• Understanding of vector tile schemas and rendering performance.
• Experience with GIS tools like QGIS and geospatial data pipelines.
• Exceptional eye for cartographic design and usability.
• Experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing strategy.
• Ability to operate at both strategic and hands-on levels.
• Track record of global-scale impact through product decisions.
