Overview

The Mental Health Counselor provides comprehensive mental health services to individuals and groups within GMHC’s OMH-licensed Article 31 outpatient clinic. This role involves assessing the mental health needs of clients—many of whom are living with or affected by HIV/AIDS—and connecting them with appropriate services and resources to address their medical and psychosocial needs.

In Short

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and develop treatment plans.
  • Provide individual, couples, and family counseling using evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
  • Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated treatment.
  • Provide crisis intervention services and support client needs.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of client interactions and treatment plans.
  • Work with diverse populations, including POC and LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel for data tracking and analysis.
  • Participate in team meetings and case reviews.
  • Engage in community events such as the annual AIDS Walk New York.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive work environment.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in social work or mental health counseling required.
  • New York State licensure or permit for psychotherapy required.
  • Strong clinical expertise in HIV/AIDS and substance use.
  • Experience with harm reduction and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge of New York State mental health regulations preferred.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with electronic case management systems preferred.
