Computational Journalist - Remote

Overview

ProPublica is seeking a computational journalist to help us uncover abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust.

In Short

• Find or build data that uncovers stories with an accountability lens.
• Conduct analyses that detect bias, influence, and other harms.
• Explain our work and make it reproducible by writing engaging methodologies.
• Develop high-impact investigative projects using code and data analysis.
• Clean, bulletproof, and spot-check data that underpins our investigations.
• Scrape websites and wrangle data, including unstructured data.
• Consume APIs, including poorly designed ones.

Requirements

• At least four years of experience working on data projects in a newsroom.
• Ability to bring an accountability lens to current issues through investigations.
• Experience building data pipelines and conducting rigorous analysis.
• Solid understanding of data analysis tools like R, Google BigQuery, Python/pandas.
• Experience with best practices in data journalism.
• Experience working with AI and machine learning.
• Familiarity with public data sources and experience with public records requests.
• Ability to stay organized and proactive.
• Talent for translating complex topics clearly to the audience.
• Self-discipline to work independently and eagerness to collaborate.
• Ability to travel for assignments and training.
