Deputy Director, Asia Division - Remote

Overview

The Asia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy Director to help lead the division’s work on China and other countries as required. The Asia Division is one of HRW’s six regional research programs and is made up of about 30 staff, many of them based in the region and working in challenging environments.

In Short

• Assist the Director in developing and executing effective research, advocacy, and communications strategies for China and other countries.
• Oversee both the day-to-day and longer-term research on human rights issues.
• Supervise staff working on China and other countries.
• Facilitate responses to crises and publish analytical reports.
• Edit program output produced by researchers.
• Monitor the budget and ensure appropriate resource allocation.
• Advise HRW’s senior management on advocacy strategies.
• Represent HRW in the media and through advocacy materials.
• Develop relationships with partners and local organizations.
• Conduct advocacy with high-level officials to effect policy change.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in human rights or related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience, including 4 years in management.
• Excellent leadership and management skills.
• Expertise in China’s political system and human rights concerns.
• Excellent communication skills in English and Chinese.
• Experience in developing human rights research and advocacy projects.
• Ability to navigate complex security issues.
• Editing skills for factual and legal accuracy.
• Experience working with civil society groups.
• Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration.
