Special Education Hearing Officer - Remote

Overview

The City of New York’s Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) is seeking to hire six attorneys as special education hearing officers to conduct impartial due process hearings for students with disabilities.

In Short

• Conduct hearings remotely and in person.
• Evaluate evidence and maintain courtroom procedures.
• Conduct settlement conferences with parents and the NYC Department of Education.
• Issue written decisions based on hearings.
• Perform legal research on education laws and special education programs.
• Maintain professionalism in handling cases.
• Handle special assignments and presentations.
• Training provided for new hires at no cost.
• Term appointment of four years with potential for reappointment.
• Must remain a member of the New York State Bar in good standing.

Requirements

• Admission to the New York State Bar.
• Four years of relevant legal experience post-admission.
• At least eighteen months in a supervisory role.
• Experience in administrative, managerial, or complex legal work.
• Must attain NYSED impartial hearing officer certification upon hiring.
