Overview

The City of New York’s Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) is seeking a Special Education Attorney to support impartial due process hearings for students with disabilities.

In Short

  • Conduct legal research and writing for special education cases.
  • Facilitate settlement conferences between parents and the NYC Department of Education.
  • Provide case management support and organize case records.
  • Conduct appellate reviews and draft decisions.
  • Collaborate with Special Education Hearing Officers and administrative staff.
  • Maintain professionalism in handling assigned matters.
  • Assist in preparing notices and manuals.
  • Work in a hybrid office/remote schedule after training.
  • Must be a member of the New York State Bar.
  • Four years of relevant legal experience required.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
  • Four years of legal experience post-bar admission.
  • Experience supervising other attorneys.
  • Strong knowledge of special education law.
  • Ability to conduct effective settlement negotiations.
  • Experience in case management and legal writing.
  • Professional demeanor and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Must remain in good standing with the New York State Bar.
