Overview

The Director of Communications will play a critical role in shaping public perception of Sandy Hook Promise’s nonpartisan approach to policy and advocacy, developing and executing strategic communications plans to influence discussions on gun violence prevention and school safety.

In Short

  • Collaborate with senior leaders on strategic planning and messaging.
  • Implement media and partner relations strategies aligned with organizational goals.
  • Write and edit various communication materials to promote SHP.
  • Monitor news and lead media advocacy strategies.
  • Prepare spokespeople for interviews and speaking engagements.
  • Develop monthly reports to evaluate communication strategies.
  • Conduct media analysis and manage coverage archives.
  • Manage and mentor direct report.
  • Support cross-promotional campaigns and legislative endorsements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in PR, communications, or media relations.
  • Strong strategic thinking and legislative fluency.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Proven ability to earn media and manage collaborations.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; familiarity with Cision is a bonus.
