Deputy Data Editor - Remote

Overview

ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. We’re looking for a deputy data editor who can set and execute an ambitious vision for the use of data analysis in the ProPublica newsroom.

In Short

• Manage data journalists working across the newsroom on high-impact investigations.
• Proactively work to infuse a data mindset across the team and the broader staff.
• Help edit complex data stories and ensure accuracy in methodologies.
• Work with data reporters to develop project ideas and pitches.
• Help prioritize projects and stories for strategic deployment.
• Train staff on using data analysis to elevate their stories.
• Implement effective workflows for project completion.
• Execute a vision to advance ProPublica’s data journalism.

Requirements

• At least five years of experience in data-driven investigations.
• Experience with investigative or accountability journalism.
• Ability to identify relevant datasets and formulate questions.
• Experience in team building and staff motivation.
• Strong belief in transparency and open sourcing in data science.
• Knowledge of data analysis tools, especially R or Python.
• Training in statistics and experience in applying statistical concepts.
• Ability to travel occasionally for events.
