Engineering Problem Designer for AI Research - Remote

Overview

Mercor is collaborating with a leading AI research lab on a project to advance engineering problem-solving at the frontier of artificial intelligence. We are seeking experienced engineers with strong backgrounds in analytical problem design, real-world systems modeling, or competitive engineering problem-solving.

In Short

• Design original, advanced engineering problems requiring creative reasoning and multi-domain integration.
• Evaluate AI-generated engineering solutions for accuracy and adherence to constraints.
• Identify logical gaps and computational inaccuracies.
• Provide well-documented solutions using LaTeX formatting.
• Maintain high standards of technical precision and rigor.
• Minimum time commitment of 20 hours/week, up to 40 hours/week available.
• Short-term contract with potential for extension based on performance.
• Rolling onboarding, typically starting within 1–2 days after approval.
• Independent contractor arrangement with weekly payments via Stripe Connect.
• Open to contributors worldwide with English proficiency required.

Requirements

• Advanced degree or equivalent experience in engineering or related field.
• Experience designing complex analytical problems.
• Participation in engineering design competitions.
• Research or teaching experience in problem formulation and quantitative modeling.
• Proficient in creating and formatting technical documents using LaTeX.
