Overview

American Oversight is seeking a Counsel to manage a diverse caseload under different state and federal law jurisdictions, focusing on open records litigation and advancing the organization's mission of accountability and transparency.

• Litigate FOIA requests and state open records law requests.
• Manage a diverse caseload and set litigation strategy.
• Research, draft, and edit court pleadings.
• Conduct discovery and oral arguments in court.
• Negotiate with government officials regarding records requests.
• Advise on open records law and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• Participate in organizational development and mentoring of interns.
• Develop messaging materials for advocacy.
• Represent the organization in meetings and presentations.
• Engage in other relevant duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice in at least one state.
• 2+ years of litigation experience.
• Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• High degree of confidentiality and professionalism.
• Available to work East Coast business hours.
• Strong legal research and negotiation skills.
• Effective written and oral communication abilities.
• Interest in government accountability and transparency.
• Experience in a nonprofit environment is a plus.
