Overview

The Copyeditor is responsible for editing and proofreading a variety of written content across multiple departments within the museum, ensuring adherence to the museum’s style guide and maintaining clarity and consistency.

In Short

  • Edit and proofread object texts, tombstones, exhibition texts, and other didactic materials.
  • Copyedit press releases, promotional materials, newsletters, and social media posts.
  • Edit materials related to fundraising, membership programs, and event promotions.
  • Review and edit website copy for branding and style alignment.
  • Collaborate with various teams to meet content goals.
  • Use project management tools like Airtable to track workflows.
  • Ensure all content adheres to the museum’s style guide.
  • Maintain professionalism and accuracy in tone and messaging.
  • Work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Adapt to various writing styles as needed.

Requirements

  • Certificate in Copyediting or 3–5 years of professional experience.
  • Experience with nonfiction content, particularly in museum contexts.
  • Strong knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style (18th edition).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a significant advantage.
  • Familiarity with Airtable and project management tools is desirable.
  • Previous experience in a museum or cultural institution is a plus.
