Managing Editor, Book Publishing - Remote

Overview

Atlas Obscura, in conjunction with two national publishing houses, produces a line of all-ages and children's non-fiction travel books that include three New York Times bestselling titles and the recently published national bestseller, Wild Life. As we increase the number of titles we publish each year, we are looking for a managing editor to help oversee the book creation and production process. This position reports to the publishing director and is on our Entertainment Team, a division that also produces our podcasts, video, and television content.

In Short

• Oversee the book creation and production process.
• Create and maintain schedules for print projects.
• Identify author candidates and assign writing tasks.
• Edit material as needed.
• Work across departments to meet publisher and brand partner needs.
• Collaborate with the Publishing Director on editorial schedules.
• Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure production timelines are met.
• Assist in hiring and managing freelance writers and editors.
• Provide editorial direction and feedback on drafts.
• Manage invoices and contracts for freelance staff.

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in print publishing.
• Proven experience managing book projects from inception to completion.
• Ability to work across departments and with partners.
• Experience managing multiple projects with overlapping deadlines.
• Familiarity with project management tools.
• Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
