Technical Architect – eCommerce (Adobe Commerce / BigCommerce) - Remote

Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Technical Architect with deep experience in Adobe Commerce (Magento) and/or BigCommerce, as well as strong familiarity with modern integration patterns and distributed application architecture. This is a senior technical role for an engineer who can architect solutions, lead development teams, and actively contribute to complex codebases.

This role requires someone who:

• Has developed complex commerce systems firsthand
• Can design platform architecture and integration patterns
• Leads technical direction and code quality standards
• Can jump in and write production-grade code when required

Experience with OroCommerce or broader enterprise / systems engineering is highly valuable.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Technical Leadership

Own and define end-to-end technical architecture for commerce implementations.

Translate requirements into technical designs including data models, API contracts, extension strategies, and integration approaches.

Establish coding standards, architectural principles, and development best practices.

Conduct hands-on code reviews, refactoring guidance, and technical troubleshooting.

Hands-On Development

Develop complex backend and integration features in Adobe Commerce and/or BigCommerce.

Build and extend modules/plugins, services, observers, GraphQL/REST endpoints, and integration layers.

Lead debugging and performance optimization of high-traffic commerce applications.

Mentor developers through pairing, architectural breakdowns, and solution design workshops.

Integration & System Design

Architect and deliver integrations with ERP, PIM, CRM, tax, payment, search, and fulfillment systems.

Define data synchronization patterns, transformation logic, and fault-tolerant integration workflows.

Work with middleware (e.g., Boomi, MuleSoft, Celigo, or custom integration services).

Cross-Team Collaboration

Partner with Solution Architects, PMs, Designers, QA, and DevOps to ensure solution cohesion.

Represent the technical perspective in client discussions, roadmap planning, and scoping efforts.

Assist in pre-sales by evaluating feasibility and providing technical direction estimates.

Required Skills & Experience

7+ years in engineering or backend development roles, with progression into architectural responsibility.

Deep, hands-on experience with at least one:

Adobe Commerce (Magento 2) — custom modules, service contracts, APIs, catalog/pricing, checkout, indexing, performance tuning.

BigCommerce + B2B Edition — Buyer Portal, GraphQL Storefront APIs, Admin APIs, Checkout SDK, headless/Catalyst/Stylus.

BigCommerce + Catalyst

Proven ability to architect and implement complex systems, not just configure them.

Strong background integrating commerce platforms with ERP/OMS/WMS, financial systems, or warehouse automation.

Ability to lead teams and own technical decision-making.

Comfortable working across multiple programming languages, libraries, environments, and tooling ecosystems.

Experience in general backend architecture (outside commerce), such as:

Event-driven systems

Microservices and asynchronous integration patterns

Distributed data and caching architectures

Experience with modern front-end stacks (React/Next.js/Vue) or API-first / headless architectures.
